The 6th Annual Bronx Hip-hop Day on August 15th was held at IS 224 in the Mott Haven area neighborhood of the Bronx. Their schoolyard just celebrated it’s opening to the school and community in June!
The schoolyard features fitness equipment, tennis courts, and a splash pad water feature to keep cool in the summer.
This event was hosted by Hip-Hop Blvd, an organization that is “dedicated to Protect, Preserve and Empower the name of Hip Hop and its pioneers, people and culture”. Ever wanted to learn how to MC or Breakdance? Artists of all kinds gathered to showcase their talents, including graffiti, DJ’s, Performers, and HipHop history workshops for the public to attend.
This event was a showcase of love, talent, community, and a demonstration that Hip-Hop is for everyone. At TPL, we love to see the unique ways our schoolyards get activated by the community. Artists works on panels hanging on the schoolyard fence, a great way to showcase art in the yard.
Hip Hop Blvd is a local organization founded by DJ/promoter Al Pizarro alongside Terry Nelson, DJ Tony Tone, and Alex Pizarro. It serves as a dedicated platform for early artists, DJs, and creators who are frequently overlooked by the commercialized music industry. Beyond celebrating musical heritage, the group actively engages with community non-profits such as Guns Down Life Up and Street Corner Resources to promote youth safety and non-violence across New York City. Through educational efforts, it highlights key cultural milestones, like hip-hop’s birth at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx to ensure authentic history is passed down.
